As Immedis continues to grow, we’re excited to introduce some our new employees who have been kind enough to share their stories about how they found their way to Immedis. We introduced Emma Jane Tarrant last week. This week we’re thrilled to introduce Mark McAuley. They’re both already having a big impact in a short time, and Immedis is thankful for our partnership with Gradguide for helping us find and acquire such great talent.

If you’re not familiar with Gradguide, they’re a Dublin based start-up offering career guidance, mentorship and an early stage career community for recent graduates looking to get into tech. They pair these grads with mentors from some of the fastest growing tech companies in the world to help bridge the gap between them finishing their time in college and landing their first role. It’s a free resource for grads so definitely worth checking out if you or someone you know is thinking about starting a career in technology.

Here’s Mark McAuley’s story of his Gradguide experience, how he discovered Immedis and how things are going for him in his work with the Immedis sales team.

Tell me a little bit about when and how you heard about Gradguide. What were your thoughts about career and jobs at that time?  Did you have a clear understanding or idea of what you were looking for?

I learned about Gradguide from a friend who was completing the same Master of Business Management degree. He had benefited from their mentorship program as a mentee and recommended I try it. This was fortunate since at the time I didn’t a have a clear vision of my career path or what roles to pursue after graduate school. Gradguide helped me align my expectations with the types of roles that best suited my skill sets.

Prior to Gradguide, I had focused my career ambitions on roles in management consulting as this type of work tied in closely with what I studied for my master’s degree. While at Gradguide, I become more familiar with business development and learned that these types of roles aligned with my previous experience in sales. Gradguide helped me see that I could merge my experience in sales with my knowledge of business strategy and utilise that in a business development role.

Please share your experience with Gradguide. Did you have a mentor?  What types of job opportunities did you learn about?

My experience was engaging, eye opening and most importantly, fun. I’ll always look back fondly on my days working with Gradguide and my mentor. I took workshops and online courses which help you better understand your skill sets and align them with career paths. Your mentor plays an important role in guiding you through this process, with everything you do focused on finding the right position at the right company. It’s all about going for the job that best suits your ambitions. It sounds simple, but I love how Gradguide makes it about you and what you want, versus simply looking at a listing of open positions at a bunch of companies.

Using this approach, the types of job opportunities that I came across were primarily customer facing roles, in a sales capacity or in customer support. This suited my skill set as I have worked in customer facing roles for many years and enjoy engaging with the customer to better understand how I can help them achieve their goals.

How did you hear about Immedis?  Can you share a little about what made you decide to choose to work at Immedis?

One of my Gradguide mentors worked at Immedis in a role similar to the sales development representative position I currently hold. Working closely with my mentor, I was able to get a direct view into what it’s like to work at Immedis from a number of perspectives, including the sales development role, the sales and business development team, Immedis as a company and the company culture. The more I learned about Immedis, the more attracted I became to the idea of working there. I had a hunch it would be a place where I could flourish.

How long have you been at Immedis?  What has been your experience so far? How has onboarding been for you?  Your impressions of the people and the culture? Can you share a few thoughts about your expectations and hopes working at Immedis?

I have been working at Immedis for over four months now and I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned in such a short time. The culture is welcoming and is based on encouraging and nurturing learning in all aspects of my role and the people I work with. You always feel that you have all the resources and guidance you require to develop and succeed.

I am part of the commercial team and this involves connecting and collaborating with key stakeholders within organizations across the world in order to understand their payroll operations challenges. By gaining a clear understanding of their challenges, I’m able to assess their needs and show how Immedis can solve their problems. It all comes down to streamlining payroll operations in a way that saves time, money and also improves payroll accuracy. I get a thrill out of working closely with customers and prospects, grappling with their challenges and showing how we can help.

In terms of my expectations and hopes from working at Immedis, I’ve learned so much in such a short time. I’m confident I have the resources and support to be successful and play my part in helping Immedis achieve its business goals.

Do you have any advice for soon to be grads or recent grads regarding finding a job that's the right fit?

My advice is that even after you complete your degree, it’s important to stay focused on learning new skills and improving your competencies. It’s important to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and development. This will help you strengthen your skills and even discover new skills. You may also discover new interests that could lead you to a role you hadn’t considered before.
